These were similar to the four Vickers calibre export model guns used by Britain as railway artillery on the Western Front in World War I under the designation BL 9.
They fired the same pound shell using the same pound cordite charge as the British service Mk X gun, and it may be assumed that its performance was very similar.
These were 'counter-bombardment' guns designed to defeat ships up to heavy cruisers armed with 8-inch guns.
They were deployed in the fixed defences of major defended ports throughout the British Empire until the s. Their role was to defeat enemy ships attacking the ships in a port, including warships, alongside or at anchor in the port.
However, where guns covered narrows, such as the Dover Straits, the Straits of Gibraltar, or the Narrows of Bermuda, they also had a wider role of engaging enemy ships passing through the straits.
Normally deployed in batteries of two or three guns, a few major ports had several batteries positioned miles apart.
There were several marks of mountings and a battery had extensive underground facilities in addition to the guns visible in their individual gun-pits.
This and some modified to Mark VI 30 degrees and 29, yards were manually powered, the projectile and propelling charge were manually hoisted to loading level, the projectile manually loaded and rammed, and traverse and elevation were by handwheels.
There was an elevated platform around the breech area for the gun detachment commander No 1 and some detachment members, and a Gun shield to the front.
The ordnance and mounting together weighed some tons, they were well balanced and the handwheels needed very little effort to move the gun.
Both were hydraulically powered and the platform was enclosed in a roofed gun house with three sides and rear with Mark IX. The hydraulics meant that both projectile and propelling charge could be hoisted in a single load.
Each gun mounting was installed on a central cast-steel pedestal in an open concrete gunpit 35 feet in diameter and 11 feet deep.
The gun and mounting weighed tons. A very narrow gauge rail track was embedded around the gunpit floor. A trolley was manhandled around the track between the two ammunition lifts one for projectiles, one for propelling charges and the rear of the gun this position varied depending on where the gun was pointed.
Below the gun pit were the separate ammunition bunkers for projectiles and shells with direct access to the ammunition lifts. These bunkers had an access road leading to them for ammunition re-supply.
The guns presented only a very small target above ground level, guns and gunpits were camouflaged. Two or three guns comprised a named battery position with the guns manned by a Heavy Battery.
For example, in Madalena and Bijemma batteries, both with 9. Increasing ranges led to new centralised control arrangements.
Fortress observation posts, equipped with rangefinders and directors were sited — 10, yards apart to give observation of all the sea area within range.
The details were telephoned to batteries. Various types of radars integrated into the fire command soon became widespread in WW2 and enabled effective night engagements.
The following table summarises the deployment of 9. The three guns in Bermuda remained in battery through the Second World War and are still in situ , but were not actively utilised.
Portugal has several surviving examples, with live firings as recently as 10 December The Portuguese refer to these guns as In Elswick adapted a small number of Mk X guns, 2 Mk X variants originally intended for coast defence in Australia, and 4 calibre Vickers export guns under the designation 9.
From several Mk X guns were deployed ashore on the section of the Belgian coast still held by the Allies, near Nieuport.
They were part of the "Royal Naval siege guns" under the command of Admiral Sir Reginald Bacon , and were used for attacking German heavy gun batteries.
It is unclear if any UK guns were also transferred. There are ten guns in the surrounds of Cape Town , South Africa:. Near Simon's Town three 9. On Robben Island three 9.
Near central Cape Town one 9. In Portugal one 9. In Bermuda , two Mk X guns survive on St. David's Battery , overlooking the Narrows Channel that leads to St.

Please try again later. Much better than that. I didn't expect this quality at this price. I ordered these basically for a "beater set" to use at work for things like bolting Destaco clamps to temporary fixtures, rough work, and the general abuse you don't want to subject an expensive pair of matched blocks to, and would have been satisfied if they were within a few thousanths of nominal dimensions.
Just for fun, I decided to check these in the layout lab, and they almost meet the tolerances for matched sets that cost several dozens of times the amount I paid for these.
The worst spot I found when checking parallelism, squareness, flatness, overall dimensions, and variation between the two blocks was a low spot in the center of one of the 2x3 inch faces of one block, and it was only cupped out by 0.
Some things I did not have time to check today were hardness, surface profile, and what grade of steel they are, but by appearances I believe they are likely good quality there as well.
They were in a thin cardboard box and wrapped in oil paper, but I'm considering making a nice wooden box for them and going ahead and certifying them for actual toleranced work if the hardness checks out like the rest did.
And yes, I'll be ordering more soon. This is perfect when a square block of steel is needed. I use them as calibration standards for my woodworking tools.
They're not good enough for high precision metal work, but they're perfect to calibrate the scale on my miter saw fence I'm also using four of these, bolted to the saw bed, to hold the miter saw fence exactly vertical and at right angles to the blade path.
BTW, if you look at the picture, the fence pieces are normally much closer together Want to see if your cheap calipers are reading right?
Grab one of these and measure it. These are cheap and they work. Keep them corrosion free, don't drop them and they'll last forever. For the price, I expected to find some flaws.
The dimensions and angles are perfect. I plan to use these to set-up woodworking machines, so my definition of "perfect" might differ from someone that is using them to build spacecraft or some other engineering marvel.
None-the-less, according to my micrometer and combination sqaure, these blocks are right on the money.
Very heavy for their size, so they'll stand on-end and won't easily be knocked over or off a table. I did not test the threaded holes and doubt I'll ever use them, so I can't comment on that feature.
However none of the threads looked mangled, and appeard to be nicely milled. The price is great, they arrived fast, and the quality seems good.
Takes the place of a few other woodworking tools. The only issue I have with this product isn't even a true issue. However, the packaging was mediocre at best.
They were packaged in a thin cardboard box think cereal box , and the blocks were wrapped in what appeared to be a oily, anti-corrosive paper I hope they don't corrode into dust within a year.
No protective case included remember the low price. Amazon shipped said box in a cardboard envelope. Luckily, mine arrived in perfect condition.
Made in China, in case that matters. So I've had these blocks for almost two years now. No corrosion, still look fine. Perfectly happy with the purchase.
I initially had a pretty narrow set of uses in mind for these blocks, but I've found them to be useful for lots of purposes.
Upon first inspection these seem incredibly well made for the price. I have yet to put the micrometers on them to truly verify sizes, but I do not expect them to be wildly off.
Most likely if you bought these for machining purposes, you can easily make this modification yourself. Just remember, they're hardened, so you need a cutting tool that is harder and to go light and slow with the cutting.
Tyler Moore Top Contributor: The blocks seem to be precise, at least as far as I can measure. Whether or not they are especially hard, or hard all the way through, is harder to estimate.
They seem to be holding up great so far. The casting inside the threads is a bit rough, though it can be chased to clean it up some. The outside surfaces are nicely ground and have resisted rust so far in a very humid environment.
At this price, I think they are a great value and an asset to the shop for setup and clamping. If this review has be helpful please click the "helpful" link, thanks.
These things are invaluable to me! I'm building a dollhouse with furniture made of foam board and these blocks are just what I needed.
They act like a "second hand" to hold small pieces in-place while the glue dries. I use them as a "straight-edge" or as a weight.
Butt them against two pieces to hold them together.Buy the selected items together This item: See all customer images. I didn't expect this quality at this price.
